Bellerose Bulldogs Football

Nathan Brake was the first star for the undefeated Bellerose Bulldogs in metro Edmonton junior football Tuesday.

The Grade 10 slotback lit up the O’Leary Spartans for four touchdowns in the 54-7 drubbing at Riel Recreation Park.

Brake scored twice off short runs in the first quarter, ripped the ball out of the defensive back’s hands in the endzone in the second quarter and returned a fumbled punt to the house to close out the scoring in the fourth quarter.

Brake was credited with 47 yards on four carries and caught four passes for 108 yards as the Bulldogs improved to 3-0 for their 32nd consecutive victory in league play and playoffs combined after losing the 2011 semifinal to the Bev Facey Falcons.

The Bulldogs started substituting players late in the first quarter while leading 28-0. It was 41-0 at halftime and the bench cleared in the third quarter.

O’Leary broke the shutout with a 70-yard major in the fourth quarter against several backups on defence.

In the first half, Sheldon MacKay busted loose for a pair of rushing majors and Jared Koziol hooked up with Keegan Power, Andrew Nielsen and Brake through the air to march the ball. Several questionable holding penalties also negated big gains.

Nielsen also took a turn at quarterback in the second quarter and scored off a designed run covering 53 yards on his first play at the helm.

Alex Ward also came off the bench for a three-yard major in the third quarter,

Trey Lavoie, fresh off the injury reserve list, converted six out of eight TDs.

The Memorial Marauders (3-0) are up next for the Bulldogs and Tuesday’s kick-off is 6 p.m. at Fuhr Sports Park.

The last pool B game before the division one crossover playoffs with pool A is the Battle of St. Albert against the Paul Kane Blues (2-1) Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. Last year the Bulldogs beat the Blues 14-7 for their fourth win in a row over Paul Kane after losing the inaugural 2011 showdown
